Yang Bao was commissioned by The Donum Estate in Sonoma, CA, to compose for the launch ceremony of Vertical Panorama Pavilion by the world-renowned Icelandic-Danish artist Olafur Eliasson and Sebastian Behmann. To find the best sound for the pavilion that reflects the environmental changes at Donum, Bao visited Iceland for inspiration and composed music dedicated to the soil, the wind, the sun, and the water that contribute to the complexity of the wine at Donum. Driven by his concept of “Infinity Music,” Bao played his four compositions simultaneously in the pavilion to create infinite combinations of sounds and emotions that multiplied and evolved by chance. His site-specific composition “Hyperdrive” is a choir of the past, the present, and the future that constantly composes itself. 

During his live performance, Bao premiered his album “Hyperdrive.” The piano was mic-ed and amplified through speakers all over The Donum Estate. The music recirculated and breathed inside the pavilion, like a church organ, and then flowed outward and echoed throughout the landscape, turning Donum into a gigantic spatial soundscape. Each audience had a unique experience depending on one’s location. Fascinated with echoes and sounds beyond his control, Bao composed “Hyperdrive” as an ode to the unpredictable changes in the world that is greater than us humans.

Trained as a classical pianist, Yang Bao explores minimalist aesthetics in his original compositions. In this album “Hyperdrive,“ Yang Bao combines electronic synthesizers and piano sounds to reimagine classical aesthetics through the fantasy of science fiction. This album presents a futuristic landscape through dazzling techniques and imaginative timbre, like a huge UFO landing in a heavenly garden, where romance and crisis coexist.
